"Automatic Indexing of Internet Multimedia"

Scope and Topic:

This special session aims to provide a forum for the presentation of state-of-the-art research results in this emerging field and to address the growing interests in automatic indexing of Internet Multimedia. The special session will focus on mechanisms capable of exploiting the full range of information available online to automatically assign tags and labels to multimedia data on the Internet.

The topics of interest for this special session include (but are not limited to):
- Generating Tags
- Exploiting metadata
- Ontology based learning
- Combining modalities
- Confronting noise
- Duplicity and redundancy detection
- Social media mining
- User contributed comments and ratings
- Authority and trust
- Exploiting external data resources
- Making use of geo-tags and other sensor-based social information

This special session will especially target the Eternals (https://www.eternals.eu) and the MediaEval (http://www.multimediaeval.org/) communities from whom a large number of high quality submissions is expected. The EternalS Support Action links together projects conducting research in the areas of automatic learning, multimedia analysis and networked systems. MediaEval is a benchmarking initiative dedicated to evaluating new algorithms for multimedia access and retrieval. It attracts participants who are interested in multimodal approaches to multimedia involving, e.g., speech recognition, multimedia content analysis, user-contributed information (tags, tweets), viewer affective response, social networks, temporal and geo-coordinates. We anticipate that some of the submissions will be revised extended and improved versions of the two-page working notes papers from the MediaEval 2011 workshop:http://ceur-ws.org/Vol-807/

Tomas Piatrik is a Senior Researcher at the Multimedia and Vision (MMV) Research Group in Queen Mary University of London. His research expertises include multimedia analysis and retrieval, machine learning and optimisation techniques for automatic multimedia tagging. He has actively participated in several EU funded multimedia oriented research projects including K-Space, MESH, Petamedia, 3DLife, Cubrik, Videosense and NextMEDIA. Furthermore, he is coordinating MMV activities in the EternalS project including multimedia tags prediction using semantic expansion.

Bogdan Ionescu is a Lecturer with the Image Processing and Analysis Research Center (LAPI) in University Politehnica of Bucharest and also a collaborator of the laboratory LISTIC, Polytech Annecy-Chambery, University of Savoie. His research expertises include video processing and analysis and multimedia information retrieval.

Martha Larson is Senior Researcher at the Multimedia Information Retrieval Lab of Delft University of Technology. Her main interests are in speech and language technology for multimedia retrieval. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and holds a PhD from Cornell University. She is co-founder of the MediaEval multimedia benchmark.

Gareth Jones is a Principal Investigator in the Centre for Next Generation Localisation and the Centre for Digital Video Processing and Faculty Member of the School of Computing, Dublin City University, Ireland. He has wide experience in multimedia information retrieval technologies including supervising work in annotation of geo-tagged images using social media and search for internet video. He was co-founder of the MediaEval benchmarking initiative.
